Horseback riding on the beach in Cahuita

At Brigitte’s Ranch we’re guided by 40 years of experience living in beautiful Cahuita. Our tourist centre can help you to plan all sorts of activities but here are our top 6 things to do in Cahuita, Costa Rica!

1. Horseback riding

It really is unmissable to see the beauty that Cahuita has to offer from horseback. There are few better feelings than galloping along the beach! With our horseback tours, you have the option to visit the white sand beaches, the jungle and the mountains.

Our guides have years of experience making sure that everybody feels comfortable. Whether you’re an experienced rider or a complete beginner, we’ll make sure you have an amazing time.

What’s more, our horses are really well looked after and only fed organic food. You can be confident you’re riding healthy, happy horses that really love their jobs.

2. Cacao tasting

Costa Rica is one of the countries worldwide producing high quality cacao and the native Criollo tree grows here. Cahuita is no different (in fact, you could be surrounded by cacao trees if you stay at our ranch) and you have the opportunity to taste chocolate that is grown, roasted and prepared right before your eyes.

3. Exploring the wildlife of Costa Rica at night

Costa Rica is home to more than 500,000 species of animals, making it one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. Pink butterflies, green and red frogs, snakes as well as different species of spiders can be spotted in their natural habitat in a jungle near Brigitte's Ranch. A tour at night makes the experience even more special and adventurous.

4. Visit Cahuita National Park

The entrance to our wonderful national park is right next to Cahuita town centre. The hiking trail that starts here is the perfect opportunity to spot local wildlife including toucans, kingfishers, sloths, capuchin monkeys, agouti, raccoons and much more.

Halfway around the route brings you to Punta Cahuita, a tiny white-sand beach and crystal clear water where you can take a break and admire the Caribbean sea.

5. Snorkeling

Just off the coast of our national park is a beautiful protected coral reef full of colourful fish, turtles and even harmless sharks. You could spot all of this with a snorkelling tour that shows you the precious underwater life we’re so proud of.

There are a few things to know before going. If it has recently rained, this reduces visibility in the water due to silt brought down the Estrella river. It’s important to ask whether the conditions are good before you book. You can only snorkel with a certified guide in order to protect the coral, as much of it is endangered due to climate changes and excess fertiliser.

Brigitte’s Ranch can help you to organise the perfect snorkelling excursion.

6. Surfing

Cahuita really is a surfer’s paradise. Five months out of the year the sea has wonderful waves for experienced and beginner surfers alike. There are lots of board rental places to choose from, including places that give lessons to those looking to learn something new!

The ocean temperature on our side of the country is consistently at around 25-30 Celsius/ 77-86 Fahrenheit. Perfect for swimming as well as surfing.

When to visit Cahuita

Now you have your bucket list of things to do in Cahuita, when is the best time to visit? Every time of the year has its own charm, but the sunniest months would September, October and November. During these months the sea is sometimes smooth like a lake. Also during the months March, April and May it is usually very sunny and the sea is perfect for surfing.
